Home of Golf appoints ‘ambassadors’

12.05am 9th August 2002 - Travel

VisitScotland chairman, Peter Lederer has announced that high-profile professional golfers Catriona Matthew, Kathryn Marshall and Steven O’Hara will act as world-wide ambassadors for Scottish golf.

Their attendance at numerous international competitions will allow them to endorse Scotland as the home of golf, and encourage golf enthusiasts to put a Scottish golfing break at the top of their “must-visit” list.

This announcement is the latest element in VisitScotland’s golf marketing strategy which aims to build on the success the sport already has for Scotland but also to stress that golf is an activity that is open to everyone.

The golfers’ ambassadorial role is backed by specific “Scotland – Home of Golf” branding on all the golfers’ kit.

Peter Lederer said: “Golf is an important market for Scotland, generating £119million per annum. Our three new ambassadors will play a huge part in re-affirming Scotland as the Home of Golf and encouraging aficionados and enthusiasts to come here and sample the history, tradition, scenery and world class golfing facilities that are on offer.

“We are delighted that Catriona, Kathryn and Steven have agreed to support Scottish tourism and specifically target the message about Scotland’s assets to the international golfing community, especially in the US which holds great potential for us.”
