J.J. Spaun won the US Open in stunning fashion on Sunday, making birdies at the final two holes at Oakmont Country Club to win by two shots in extremely testing conditions.
The 34-year-old American came into the season’s third major ranked 25th in the world, with just one PGA Tour victory to his name, and a major record that included just eight appearances over the last eight years and a best-placed finish of tied 23rd at the Masters in 2022.
But he swept his status as a journeyman aside – and moved to a new career high 8th in the OWGR – with a confident display over four gruelling days at Oakmont, shooting rounds of 66, 72, 69 and 72 to post a one-under-par total and end the week as the only player to finish under the card.
Spaun finished two shots ahead of Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre, who shot a closing 68 to briefly hold the clubhouse lead after starting the final round six shots off the pace, while Norway’s Viktor Hovland finished third with a 73 on Sunday.
Spaun holed a 64-foot birdie putt on the 72nd green to secure his first major title. He completed the hugely testing back nine in just 32 shots, turning around a disastrous front nine of 40, which started with five dropped shots.
Spaun used a variety of different equipment brands to take him to victory, including a L.A.B Golf DF3 putter, which became the first putter with zero torque technology to win a major title. Zero torque putters, which have rapidly gained popularity on Tour over the past few seasons, are designed to resist twisting through the putting stroke, allowing the face to stay square.
Alongside his monster championship-winning putt at the last, Spaun holed out from distance several times on the back nine on Sunday, including a 40-footer down the hill at 12, and a 22-footer on 14. Spaun gained 10.4 strokes on the field for his putting over the course of the week, putting him second in the field for that category.
Spaun also had a combination set of Srixon ZXi irons in his bag, using the brand’s ZXi5 model for his 4-iron and the more compact ZXi7 in the 5-PW. Unusually, his short irons are standard length while his mid and long irons are slightly shorter than standard. His lie angles increases by a degree for the 6, 7 and 8 irons. Spaun hit 51 of the 72 greens in regulation (70%) over the course of the tournament.
Looking at the top end of the bag, Spaun used a Titleist GT3 driver and a pair of TaylorMade Qi10 fairway woods. The newest major winner was dialled in throughout the week with his driver, gaining +2.35 strokes off the tee (26th). He also ranked T19 in driving accuracy, hitting 35 of 56 fairways (63%) on the demanding US Open setup.
At the other end of the bag, Spaun rounded out his equipment options with three Cleveland wedges, using a combination of the brand’s RTX and RTZ models. He played with Srixon’s Z-Star Diamond golf ball.
Spaun wore pieces from Puma Golf’s Mattr collection apparel range throughout the tournament, and battled the difficult course conditions in a pair of PUMA Ignite Elevate 2 Tour shoes that were fitted with SoftSpikes Tour Flex Pro cleats.
Speaking about overcoming the challenges of playing in the slippery conditions on Sunday, Spaun said: “Despite the extreme conditions this week, Puma gave me everything I needed to persevere out here at Oakmont, especially shoes that provided incredible traction and stability with so much water on the ground.”
