Falmouth Golf Club sold to local couple

Falmouth Golf Club, which overlooks Falmouth Bay, just above the southwest coastal path, has been sold its current owner to husband-and-wife team Ian Lancaster and Alison Turner, who are also Falmouth residents.

The club, which was originally established in 1894, was put on the market with property agents Miller Commercial by owner David Hughes in April this year for a guide price of £2.75m.

He owned the popular Cornish club for almost 20 years, having bought it for £1.5m in 2004, and during that time has overseen the complete redevelopment of the clubhouse and on-site restaurant, Above The Bay, and significant alterations and improvements to the golf course, which earlier this year saw the opening of newly designed 18th hole, which now provides a grandstand finish in front of the clubhouse.

Lancaster and Turner, who have assumed ownership with immediate effect, said: “We are so excited to take over the running of the golf club and Above the Bay restaurant – it is such a beautiful spot on the Cornish coast and the golf course has unrivalled views across the bay.

“If you’re a golfer, you’re going to want to play here! David Hughes has made some major improvements to the club and restaurant, including adding a wedding venue, and we look forward to taking it to the next level, making it into a true destination facility that will continue to be a major asset for the Falmouth community and tourists alike.”

The site extends to 94 acres and in addition to the clubhouse there is a professionals’ shop, greenkeepers’ shed, main car park, overflow car park, putting green and short game practice area. A further parcel of land, measuring 14 acres, on the southern boundary part of the course is also part of the sale. The club currently has a playing membership of 600 and 150 social members.
