The ongoing support of Sarah Bennett, PGA Fellow Professional & former PGA Captain, for Thymic Cancer research continues to improve patient care, treatment development and scientific understanding of this rare disease.

Eight years ago, Sarah launched “Wendy’s Thymic Fundraiser” in memory of her late friend Wendy. Inspired by Wendy’s passion for golf, the initiative has since supported major advances in research and patient care.

The first global research programme of its kind focused on rare Thymic Cancers has relied on the dedication and collaboration of clinicians, researchers, fundraisers and patients. Throughout the programme, Sarah has championed investment in research to improve diagnosis, patient support, treatment pathways and outcomes.

Phase One has now been completed under the leadership of Andrea Billè, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, Nonaka Daisuke Pathologist with the help of a top Japanese scientist, Eleni Karapanagiotou Consultant Medical Oncologist and researcher, Marrika Colvin Lung and Thymic Clinical Nurse Specialist their team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Cancer Centre.

Two research papers have been published, significantly expanding understanding of Thymic Cancer the first of its kind worldwide.

Andrea Billè explains: “We aim to understand the molecular profile of the thymic tumour. Immunotherapy can be effective in treating thymic cancers but may also cause significant side effects. Our research seeks to identify when immunotherapy may be most beneficial, helping to maximise treatment effectiveness while minimising toxicity.”

In addition, he highlighted the impact of the Sarah’s support: The community fund is helping us collect clinical data across the UK, improving treatment options and preventing disparities in access to treatment. The resulting outcomes enable centres of excellence across the country to provide local treatment for patients.”

Ten regional therapy centres as a result are now connected with Guys Cancer Centre sharing and utilising knowledge obtained through previous and ongoing research from both phases.   The sharing of this research and key findings has improved patient outcome across the United Kingdom and beyond.

Following the programme’s success, Sarah has committed to supporting ongoing fundraising. Phase Two will include a significant expansion of both the research programme and patient treatment network.

Sarah’s relentless fundraising to date includes golf days, running challenges, tow path walking and golf shirt design. These ideas have resulted in substantial monetary contributions aiding patient care and treatment development. Two Essex Club Captains chose Wendys Thymic Fundraiser to be their chosen charity truly a remarkable feat.

During a recent visit to Guy’s Cancer Centre, Sarah presented a further £8,000 donation to Louise Rafferty, Head of Fundraising. This brings the total raised to £53,379.72.

All funds have supported Thymic Cancer Research and the James Spicer Early Trials Cancer Research Programme, driving innovation, clinical trials and future treatments.

Marrika Colvin, Lung and Thymic Clinical Nurse Specialist commented: “On behalf of the Specialist Thymic Malignancy Team at Guy’s Cancer Centre, we are incredibly grateful to Sarah Bennett for her generous donation in support of thymic research and the UK Registry for Thymic Epithelial Tumours (TETS).

“Funding such as this is invaluable in helping us advance understanding of these rare cancers, develop future research opportunities, and ultimately improve outcomes and support for patients and families affected by thymic malignancies.”

Sarah also visited the Innovation Hub, often described as the research centre’s engine room, where she met Bethlehem (Betsy) Arefaine from the KHP Cancer Biobank. The visit provided insight into the cutting-edge technology utilised.

Reflecting on the programme’s progress, Sarah was immensely moved and touched commenting: “It’s heartwarming how golf has become such a support catalyst enabling this inaugural research which continues to honour Wendy’s passion for the sport.

“The outcome has far exceeded my expectations with two papers published growing knowledge within the medical world.

“I am determined to continue to assist those with thymic cancer to ultimately experience less invasive treatment options. I am continually touched by the gratitude from patients at the centre during my visits.”

Sarah recognises and appreciates the support from the golf industry whose companies have provided prize donations and contributions. In addition, her PGA colleagues and Golf Clubs whose generosity has been instrumental to the initiative’s success.

Through determination, leadership and a commitment to improving outcomes for patients with the rare thymic cancers. Sarah Bennett has created a legacy which is advancing medical research and changing patients’ lives and treatment both Nationally and Internationally.

Rachael Kiggell, Fundraising Director, Guy’s Cancer Charity said, “Guy’s Cancer Charity is incredibly grateful for Sarah’s continued dedication and generosity in organising this annual golf event in memory of her friend Wendy. Through Sarah’s remarkable fundraising efforts, not only is Wendy’s legacy being honoured in a deeply meaningful way, but vital funds are also being raised to further thymic tumour research. Sarah has also helped raise awareness within the golfing community, whose amazing support and willingness to come together each year is truly inspiring.”

The Wendy’s Thymic Fundraiser 2027 Charity Golf Day will be held on 23rd September 2027 at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club in Essex.

Sarah is seeking another venue with availability on June 24th 2027 who would be interested in hosting this event. She concluded: “The aim is to seek an additional venue in the Midlands / Northern England to accommodate my valued golfers who have attended my Women’s Golf Schools.”
