Faldo’s charity drive

12.11am 6th July 2004 - People

Nick Faldo announced today that his Faldo Series has been officially awarded charitable status, a move that will further concrete the six-time major winner’s commitment to developing the sport through which he has made his name.
“Charitable status is an inevitable move for us and something I have envisaged the Faldo Series achieving since the outset,” said Nick Faldo after the announcement. “It has always been my intention to assist in bringing the game of golf to as broad and varied an audience as possible and I‘m sure that this new development will help us to do exactly that.”
The Faldo Series will become part of The Faldo Trust for Tomorrow’s Champions (charity no. 1102719), a new company limited by guarantee with charitable status. The full extent of the changes will not come into effect until the beginning of next season and the plans are very much in their initial stages, but these changes will affect the Faldo Series in two major ways.
Firstly, it will be endeavouring to work more closely with official golf bodies towards creating and implementing nationwide golf development policies. Together they hope to further expose a younger audience to the game and give children throughout the UK a chance to experience golf first-hand.
Secondly, the Faldo Series itself will be made more accessible, in the hope that a more diverse group of golfers will be able to benefit from its existing opportunities. This will involve the addition of regional tournaments to the current schedule, aimed at giving more players the chance to qualify for the annual Faldo Series final. There will also be added qualification opportunities into those regional tournaments. These will bring top-level competition and education to young golfers who have not been able to take part in previous years for whatever reason.
Nick concluded, “Above all, I hope that we can help to make golf a more accessible game. Creating chances and offering proper guidance is what the Faldo Series is all about and that’s exactly what we will be looking to expand upon.”
