A new list celebrating the golf destinations that define bucket lists and offer some of the most spectacular settings in the game has been unveiled in the inaugural Golf World Top 100 X Factor Courses World ranking.
Published in the latest edition of Today’s Golfer magazine, the ranking introduces courses selected not only for their architectural merit, but for the emotional impact they have on golfers through their scenery, history and sense of occasion.
Compiled by Golf World’s Top 100 Courses Editor Chris Bertram, the list focuses primarily on courses distinguished by their extraordinary natural surroundings, while also recognising a select group of iconic venues whose reputations have been shaped by hosting some of golf’s biggest events.
The ranking was compiled with input from an international panel of experienced golf travellers and course experts, including photographers, journalists and ranking specialists with extensive knowledge of golf destinations across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. These included Jacob Sjoman, Harris Kaplan, Ian Poysden, Quentin Lutz, Alex Frolish, Ed Butler, John Ainsworth, Kieran Bell, David Jones and Thomas Dean.
Of the 100 courses included, Bertram says that 91 earned their place because of their remarkable settings, while nine were selected largely because of their association with major championships, Ryder Cups and other landmark tournaments.
Bertram said: “Unlike traditional rankings that place a strong emphasis on architectural detail, the X Factor list was created for golfers who are drawn to dramatic landscapes, celebrated championship venues and the type of courses that remain etched in the memory long after the final putt has dropped.
“Not everyone wants subtlety and quirkiness; some want jaw-dropping aesthetics and dramatic carries over the edge of cliffs. I do think lots of golfers love to play where the very biggest tournaments in the game have been held.”

Augusta National claimed the top spot despite the ranking being dominated by coastal courses. Bertram described the home of the Masters as “no ordinary place”, citing its mystique, exclusivity and the sense of walking in the footsteps of golf’s greatest players as the reasons behind its selection as the world’s ultimate X Factor destination.
Among the highest-ranked courses based purely on their scenery were Norway’s Lofoten Links (3), where golfers play between the Norwegian Sea and towering mountains, and Cabot St Lucia (4), whose routing incorporates nine greens perched above the Atlantic Ocean. Old Head of Kinsale (5), Cape Wickham (7) and South Cape Owners Club (10) also featured prominently thanks to their dramatic clifftop settings and panoramic ocean views.

For golf destinations, resorts and tourism organisations, the publication of the World X Factor list provides further evidence of the growing importance of experiential travel within the golf sector. Increasingly, golfers are seeking memorable, visually spectacular experiences that extend beyond traditional measures of course quality, creating new opportunities for destinations capable of combining outstanding golf with world-class scenery.
