March ’rounds played’ average hits 13-year high

11.21am 21st May 2025 - Management Topics

Leading sports research and data analytics company Sporting Insights has reported a strong end to the first quarter of 2025 for the number of rounds of golf played in Great Britain, with the company reporting a 41% uptick for the month of March against 2024’s figure.

Buoyed by unseasonably warm and sunny spring weather and golf’s continued popularity, March’s average rounds were the highest since 2012, and higher than those reported in the immediate post-Covid boom years of 2022 and 2023. The weather in March 2024 was particularly wet and gloomy, further exacerbating the disparity between the figures for the same month this year.

In total, it left the 2025 Q1 average up 18% against 2024, and effectively level with 2022 and 2023.

John Bushell, managing director of Sporting Insights, reflected: “I’m so pleased for all those golf courses and clubs who I know have worked so hard to deliver the best possible playing conditions and membership and visitor welcome over the last few years.

“Clubs have successfully battled recent winters and springs that were wetter than the long term averages and are being rewarded in course usage. Participation has remained strong, and golf continues to be in a great spot.

“Golf delivers great physical, social and mental health benefits, and I’m delighted that more and more people are finding life-long value and joy in the sport. Hopefully the weather cooperates for a glorious golfing summer.”
