Softspikes doubles guarantee

8.45am 28th December 2000 - Corporate

Softspikes® Inc. has doubled the value of the Money Back Performance Guarantee, which stands behind its revolutionary Black Widow® cleat.

Softspikes spokesman, Bill McGuinness, said that the company’s move to strengthen its Money Back Performance Guarantee, in place since the beginning of the year had been made to highlight the Black Widow’s exceptional performance in wet winter weather.

“We want to specifically highlight the’wet weather’ aspects of the Guarantee so that the trade and the golfing public will appreciate just how well the Black Widow cleat performs in wet conditions,” he said.

With immediate effect, any golfer who purchases Black Widow cleats and is not completely satisfied with their wet weather performance will receive a full refund of the total price, in accordance with the terms of the current Money Back Performance, and they will also have the added satisfaction of knowing that Softspikes will make a similar donation, made out in the golfer’s name, to the Golf Foundation.

“Wet weather and wet conditions are the very situations where the Black Widow demonstrates its incredible traction,” said McGuinness.’Dynamic Cleat Technology’ is what makes this possible. The Black Widow cleat design does not rely for its traction on the cleat digging into the turf. Rather, the Black Widow design actually grips the grass itself to anchor it firmly in place. The flexible legs bend upward when the golfer walks, and trap the grass between the legs of the cleat and the sole of the shoe. In addition, the multiple legs provide a firm platform on the turf to prevent side-slipping. This dual-action traction mechanism is both unique and patented.

“This is one of the main reasons why the Black Widow has had such a phenomenal success on the professional tours world-wide,” McGuinness added. “Already over 80% of the players on the US PGA tours are wearing Black Widows, and the numbers here in Europe aren’t far behind that, standing at slightly over 60%. We’ve had a slightly slower pickup in usage overall but already 95% of the European Senior Tour players are wearing Black Widow cleats.”

“Tour players world-wide can’t stop to change cleats just because it rains and gets slippery. They want ultimate performance in all conditions and that’s why so many of them rely on Black Widow cleats. With a metal spike, you’re dependent on one piece of metal digging into the ground. But with the Black Widow, you have 8 times the point of contact with the ground, plus you’re anchored to the grass itself. That’s why the majority of tour pros now prefer them to metal spikes, although it also helps that Black Widow cleats also give a tremendous increase in comfort too.

“Softspikes urges golfers to evaluate the Black Widow cleat in today’s wet conditions to demonstrate to themselves how good the cleats are,” McGuinness said, “If nothing else, this horrible wet weather we’ve been experiencing throughout the UK gives us an ideal opportunity to test the Black Widow cleats in adverse conditions.

“We can’t think of a better’wet weather test laboratory’ than the conditions which now exist.”
