Sierraform GT- a breakthrough in golf green fertilizers

12.05am 22nd January 2007 - Corporate

Scotts is launching the first golf green fertilizer with slow release potassium. Scotts’ Sierraform fertilizer has been further improved and – in addition to slow release nitrogen – now also includes slow release potassium. This dual effect means that greens fertilized with Sierraform GT are more resilient to extreme conditions such as cold, heat, drought and heavy wear, all year round. Sierraform GT will be available from this month. The launch will be supported by a special website (www.sierraformgt.com).

The slow release potassium is fully incorporated into the tiny granules of Sierraform GT. It is therefore not a mix of different components, nor is it based on a form of coating technology. Instead, it is based on a synthetic matrix structure that breaks down gradually over time. This structure – developed by Scotts – releases potassium slowly under the influence of water.

After the application of Sierraform GT, the release process is “triggered” by moisture; the normal level of moisture in the soil is sufficient. Once the slow release potassium has been activated, it will be released continually throughout the effective period, remaining available for the grass plant during that time. Rain or irrigation have no influence on the speed of the process.

Leon Terlingen, International R&D Director of Process & Formulation at Scotts, says, “Compared with potassium sulfate – a frequently used fast-release source of potassium, extremely sensitive to leaching, leaching barely occurs from slow release potassium. Even in periods of heavy rain, Sierraform GT leaches hardly any potassium to deeper soil layers. The grass plant is fed continuously, guaranteed.”

The importance of potassium has been ascertained beyond any doubt in scientific research. Amongst other functions, potassium is very important for the pressure within the cell, which is directly linked with the strength of the cell wall. Higher cell pressure gives rise to a stronger cell structure and therefore increased resistance to frost, disease and drought.
Sierraform GT has been tested extensively at European research stations. The product appears to improve the health and vitality of the grass by 20% (compared with a normal green fertilizer without slow release potassium), 7 days after irrigation is stopped (60 days after application). Sierraform GT is significantly more resistant to drought stress.

Sierraform GT has a longevity of 8 to 10 weeks. As of the coming season, the product will be available in 8 variants, adapted to the specific time of application.
