No uphill struggle for LPG golf cars

8.45am 12th January 2006 - Corporate

Calor is hailing 2006 as the year of the LPG powered golf car, following a surge of interest in the past twelve months. The UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas reports an estimated 500 golf cars running on the cleaner burning fuel and predicts further growth throughout the coming year as the advantages are increasingly understood.
“It’s been a remarkable period of growth but easily understood when you consider the benefits of running a fleet of golf cars on LPG,” says the company’s Barry Ohrman. “From a standing start just over a year ago, the market has taken off and we are seeing increasing levels of enquiries.”
Calor LPG is used in a wide range of applications, golf clubs and leisure facilities already use the fuel for heating and catering. However, LPG power for golf cars offers clubs a cleaner option with straightforward and reliable refuelling advantages over other fuels such as petrol and electric power.
“When it comes to petrol and diesel storage, we are increasingly hearing concerns about legislation, health and safety and environmental issues,’ adds Barry Ohrman. “Clubs can be reluctant to invest large capital sums in electrical recharging facilities and there is the need to ensure a proper schedule of recharging to keep the fleet active. By contrast, LPG is cleaner burning, more economical to use and provides rapid refuelling when required. Calor can point to a number of golf clubs already running golf car fleets as well as premises on LPG and predicts that this will become increasingly prevalent.”
It’s a view confirmed by Richard Tyrrell, international sales manager, of Ransomes Jacobsen which manufactures golf cars and utility vehicles and offers LPG options within its range. “For some time now we’ve recognised the advantages of LPG, but the growth in sales has been phenomenal,” he says. “We look to 2006 for even greater growth, driven by new fuel storage regulations and the wish of many clubs to demonstrate their commitment to environmental measures as well as economy.”
