Leading sports science consultant and performance analyst, Dr Paul Hurrion, says that he has yet to find a truer or more consistent putting surface than the Huxley all-weather putting green he has had installed at the Quintic putting laboratory, located in the West Midlands.
Supplied and constructed to Dr Hurrion’s exacting requirements by Huxley Golf’s local distributor and installer, Intercity Ltd, the Huxley all-weather putting green has become an integral part of Quintic’s professional sports training, analysis and consultancy services.
Golfers who have worked with Dr Hurrion to improve and fine tune their putting action on the Huxley surface include a number of last year’s successful European Ryder Cup team as well as several current European PGA Tour players. Other regular visitors to Quintic’s high-tech putting laboratory include low handicap club golfers and members of the Professional Golfers Association, the latter gaining 25 PDP Points for attending one of Quintic’s all-day golfing clinics.
Founded in 1998 by Dr Paul Hurrion and his father, Robert, Quintic has gained a high reputation throughout the sporting world for its range of computer software, which enables and enhances video analysis of an individual’s technique in sports as diverse as high diving, cricket, javelin throwing, bob sleighing and squash.
The expertise of Paul Hurrion – a doctor in sports biomechanics – has helped produce also a rapid expansion in Quintic’s consultancy services, with a growing number of professional golfers booking sessions in the company’s putting laboratory. Quintic’s expertise and high tech facilities have been recognised also by renowned ‘putting doctor’, Harold Swash, who has appointed the company as a franchisee trainer for his Putting School of Excellence. Harold Swash also uses a Huxley putting surface at his own indoor school in Southport, Merseyside.
“An outdoor putting green is vital to enable Quintic’s computer video analysis and indoor training sessions to be put into practice by golfers,” explained Dr Hurrion. “A natural turf green would be unsuitable due to its high maintenance demands and the variability of the surface, particularly over winter when we do much of our fine-tuning work with professional golfers. Having looked closely at a number of different synthetic surfaces, we decided to install a Huxley all-weather putting green.”
Covering 75 sq yards (63 sq m) and equipped with six holes, the green was constructed with a variety of subtle borrows and deceptive contours, specified and overseen by Dr Hurrion to provide a suitable challenge to golfers playing the green.
“There are holes with very little deviation on the approach and others with double alternate contours which make for a very interesting roll of the ball,” he explained. “Although reading the green demands concentration, the surface is both true and consistent, rewarding the diligent golfer. As for maintenance, the Huxley green needs only an occasional brushing and rolling to maintain peak condition and a good speed. I am really delighted with our investment.”
