Two days after becoming the youngest Englishman in European Tour history to reach five victories, Matthew Fitzpatrick has been confirmed to join the new World Number One golfer Justin Rose at the Sky Sports British Masters, which takes place at Walton Heath Golf Club from October 11-14.
Fitzpatrick made his professional breakthrough at the British Masters in 2015, storming to a two-shot victory on home soil, and has registered at least one win per season since – joining another fellow winner of the event, Alex Noren, as the only players to win in the last four consecutive European Tour seasons.
Following his successful defence of the Omega European Masters last week, the Sheffield player beat Sir Nick Faldo’s record as the youngest Englishman to reach five European Tour victories, at 24 years and eight days old.
To add to the excitement ahead of the Sky Sports British Masters, the tournament host Rose achieved a career goal yesterday by rising to become golf’s World Number One courtesy of his runner-up finish at the BMW Championship on the US PGA Tour.
“It’s always amazing to play on home soil,” said Fitzpatrick, who finished in a share of 11th position in the event last year. “I love playing the British Masters, obviously being a former winner is always exciting too. The crowds in the UK are the best anywhere in the world. To play in front of them again is very special.
“My experiences of Walton Heath have been a mixed bag, I wouldn’t say I have too much good form around there, apart from a good practice round once! But I’m looking forward to it. The golf course is really tough so I think it will be good when we go there in October.”
Fitzpatrick joins a host of English stars in the field, including Rose, the reigning Race to Dubai Champion Tommy Fleetwood, four-time European Tour winner Matt Wallace and fan favourite Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston.
Walton Heath has hosted a number of leading events over the years, including The 1981 Ryder Cup, the European Open on five occasions between 1978 and 1991, and The 2011 Senior Open Championship, won by American Russ Cochran.
