12.05am 5th July 2004 - Sponsorship & Events

To celebrate the important contribution Ireland has made to the Ryder Cup over the years, AIB has published a booklet that honours the seventeen Irish golfers to have played in the event. The booklet, which has been compiled by well-known golf writer Dermot Gilleece, was launched at the Smurfit European Open in the K Club, home to the 2006 Ryder Cup.
AIB is a proud partner to the 2006 Ryder Cup in Ireland and also a sponsor of this year’s Ryder Cup matches 2004. Publication of “Ireland and Ryder Cup” is part of a promotional campaign being undertaken this year by AIB.
AIB has been a major sponsor of golf in Ireland for many years and was part of the team that helped bring the Ryder Cup to Ireland. Currently AIB’s golf involvement spans the AIB Irish Seniors Open, the AIB Irish Amateur Open, the AIB Golf Club of the Year and the Smurfit European Open.
In the booklet Dermot Gilleece looks at the overall history of the Ryder Cup, Ireland’s role in that history and then goes on to profile the seventeen players who have made a considerable contribution. He also looks forward to 2006 when the K Club will play host to the event.
Speaking about the booklet Mr Jim Kelly, sponsorship manager AIB, said that when AIB first decided to become involved with the Ryder Cup sponsorship they did so in the knowledge of the outstanding contribution Ireland’s golfers had made to the event. “We decided that the story should be told – hence the booklet. We were delighted when Dermot agreed to compile it for us.”
The “Ireland and the Ryder Cup” booklet will be distributed at AIB sponsored golf events this year.
