A spectacular Graeme Baxter painting of the signature 18th hole on Royal Mid-Surrey’s JH Taylor course, was unveiled at the club in Richmond last week in the presence of members, guests and the artist himself. Measuring an impressive 4ft x 3ft, work on the painting was started by the official artist to the Open Championship and the Ryder Cup following a visit to Royal Mid-Surrey in May. Members and visitors will be able to purchase prints.
Club Captain Ed Alford (pictured above with Graeme Baxter) commented: “The reaction from those present at the unveiling spoke volumes about the quality of Graeme’s work. We feel very proud to be able to hang this work of art in the Clubhouse for members and guests to see. To know that all proceeds raised this year are going to Greenhouse Sports makes it even more special, as we can give back to the youth in the community.”
Baxter, who lives in Texas said: “This course, which I think is spectacular, possesses one of the most interesting histories of any course in England. As an artist, I needed to find the heart of the golf course and I think that the 18th hole on the JH Taylor course here at Royal Mid-Surrey is perfect for that.”
The artist with paintings of more than half of the world’s Top 100 courses, also presented a video of the compilation of the picture showing the level of detail and progression of the artwork. “I have shown off the bunkers, the fairway, captured the Pagoda at Kew Gardens, the big oak tree, people sitting on the veranda and those out playing,” said Baxter. “Even though it is a painting of the golf course, it shows the club is full of life,” he added.
