HMH Sells The Herefordshire Golf Club To Local Consortium

2.39pm 14th October 2020 - Property

HMH reports the sale of Herefordshire Golf Club, a James Braid designed 18 hole private members’ golf club, situated close to Hereford. The Club has been acquired by a consortium of local entrepreneurs, led by Kev Gallagher.

The Herefordshire Golf Club was established in 1896 but moved to its current location in 1932 after the legendary James Braid identified the site and went on to design the course. The Club comprises an 18 hole 6,055 yard (par 70) golf course, practice facilities, a two storey clubhouse and separate golf shop, all set in c. 51 hectares (126 acres). Described as ‘The Gleneagles of the Midlands’ this 124 year old Club was the proposed host for the 2020 Midlands Mid Amateur Championship.

Wyn Owen, Chairman of Herefordshire Golf Club, said “The Committee and Trustees of Herefordshire Golf Club are very pleased to have secured the Club’s future for the long-term benefit of the members. We were very pleasantly surprised by the level of interest received in the Club and are delighted to have reached an agreement with a local consortium that has the Club’s long-term interest at heart”.

The new owners plan to invest a substantial amount over the next two years to revive and modernise the club, to support the local economy, and to offer a boost to tourism in Herefordshire. Plans include an extensive refurbishment of the clubhouse, and creation of a high-quality restaurant based around local produce with the aim of promoting the best of Herefordshire. The investment will also see the return of a fully equipped pro shop at the club.

Kev Gallagher said “James Davenport, Malcolm Russell and I are thrilled to announce that we have purchased the prestigious Herefordshire Golf Club. As impassioned residents, keen golfers and experienced business owners, we will ensure the Club is prosperous, serving the local community as well as attracting audiences and players from all over the country to establish the club as a premium golfing destination for the region.”

Ben Allen of HMH, who handled the sale said: “Herefordshire Golf Club is the third private members’ golf club that we have sold in recent years and secures the Club’s future. This sale is further evidence of our long-held belief that there would be an active market for private members’ golf clubs as an when such opportunities arise. We wish Kev, James and Malcolm every success with the Club, and look forward to watching the Club evolve as the promised investment in the facilities comes to fruition.”
