Portmarnock Golf Club appoints first female general manager

Portmarnock Golf Club, which last year voted to admit women members and become gender neutral, has appointed the first female general manager in the club’s long history.

Scot Elaine McBride. who will start on January 3 next year, replaces Andrew Whitelaw, who has moved to Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia, which will host the US PGA Championship in 2026.

McBride, who formerly served in the British Army and the police force, arrives from North Berwick Golf Club. She was considered the outstanding candidate after an exhaustive recruitment process carried out by Colt Mackenzie McNair.

Portmarnock Golf Club voted last year to remove the words ‘who shall be gentlemen’ from its constitution, and now has nine women with full memberships and 28 honorary female members including former internationals Mary McKenna, Ita Butler and Claire Hourihane, as well as a number of students, girls and overseas members.
