Jill Edwards MBE will be the 24th President of the Ladies’ Golf Union since the position was instigated n 1908, and commences her two years in office in succession to Mrs. Maureen Lockett.
A keen golfer since joining Llanishen Golf Club, Wales, at the age of 13, Jill played to a high standard, winning the Welsh Girls’ Championship in two successive years and representing her country as a player and Captain on many occasions.
Her interest in golf has extended beyond playing the game she loves, and there are few jobs she hasn’t turned her hand to over the years. Chairman of the LGU in 1998,
Jill has also been a selector, team captain, and team manager at both national and international level, while as an administrator she chaired the Welsh Ladies’ Golf Union and was the GB&I representative on the European Golf Association’s Championship Committee. More recently, she served as President of both the WLGU and Glamorgan Ladies’ County Golf Association, while her outstanding contribution to golf in Wales was recognised in 2006, when she was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Jill is “pleased and honoured to be President of the newly modernised LGU. In these exciting and challenging times for golf, the LGU has an increasingly important role to play, not just in delivering the Ricoh Women’s British Open, national championships and international team matches, but also in guarding the traditions, heritage and independent voice of ladies’ golf built up over almost 120 years of the LGU’s history.”
In a busy year of international matches, Jill joins a strong Welsh contingent within the LGU. Her fellow countrywomen, International Team Captain, Tegwen Matthews, and Girls Team Captain, Sue Turner, both received their Captain’s badges at the AGM, and are looking forward to the forthcoming Astor (former Commonwealth) Trophy, Vagliano Trophy and Girls team matches in June 2011.
In the only other change to the LGU Board, Senior Internationalist Lorna Bennett took over from Janet Wake as Scottish representative, and will chair the LGU’s Championship Committee.
The AGM in Glasgow was attended by over 100 ladies, who were treated to an entertaining and inspirational talk by the European Solheim Cup Captain, Alison Nicholas.
