Links from the Road Vol 2 visits Fylde Coast, Lake District and Cumbria

Architect, author, photographer and golf course enthusiast Sam Cooper has published the second volume of his in-depth reviews of the links courses of Great Britain.

The latest volume of the series, entitled Links from the Road – is the second of 18 ‘magazines’ which are being published on a quarterly basis and will ultimately include detailed features of every one of the 225 links courses that Cooper has encountered on his travels.

Volume 2 includes essays on 12 links, ranging from Open Championship venue Royal Lytham & St Annes to the little-known 9-holer at St Bees in Cumbria, as Cooper continues his travels around the coast. It also sees him take a detour to Castletown on the Isle of Man before travelling up the north-west coast of England from Fairhaven to Silloth.

“It’s a mixture of history, architecture, photography, and unadulterated geekery,” says Cooper, whose blog and social media channels have struck a chord with all golfers who have dreamed of doing something similar. “The courses featuring in Volume 2 are still only a short day out from my home on the Wirral Peninsula, but there were plenty I encountered for the first time during the tour.”

He adds: “I’m hoping there’ll be a good mix of courses well known to all, some many will have heard of, and a few complete unknowns. Over time, I’m hoping this series will grow into a collection for those who love links golf. A reference series for planning future trips to experience the courses for themselves.”

Published by magazine specialists 18Players, each volume takes a dozen or so courses and offers a deep dive into their character and history. Every review includes Cooper’s own photography, while illustrations provide a further level of unique detail. In each essay he also muses on golf course architecture, details his favourite holes on each leg of the trip, and also offers personal recommendations on places to eat, drink and stay along the way.

Volume 2 of Links from the Road costs £17 and can be ordered from linksfromtheroad.com Volumes 3 to 18 will follow on a quarterly basis. Subscription offers to purchase all 18 volumes are also available.
