The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort has underlined its long-term commitment to helping to find golf’s stars of the future after agreeing a new partnership with nationwide golf retailer American Golf for both its Junior Championship and inaugural 9 Hole Championship this summer.

American Golf will stage a series of regional qualifying events for both competitions throughout July and August at courses across the UK and has selected The Westerwood – a member of QHotels, the UK’s largest golf resort operator – as an ideal venue to join forces with.

Under the terms of the partnership, the leading Cumbernauld resort has agreed to waive any costs for holding the events to aid American Golf’s drive to increase participation in golf. All entry fees for the competitions will be donated directly to the Golf Foundation, the golf charity that is dedicated to bringing the next generation of golfers into the game.

Paul Bray, general manager at The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort, said: “We’re really excited about being part of American Golf’s flagship events this summer and are looking forward to welcoming the region’s best golfers of all ages to The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort.”

Daniel Gathercole, head of marketing at American Golf, added: “For both of our flagship events this summer we’ve been looking to partner with venues that share our commitment to driving participation in golf.

“The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort is very welcoming to junior golfers, it isn’t afraid of new ideas like the 9 hole Championship and has been very helpful in getting these events off the ground.”

The new collaboration with American Golf is a further illustration of The Westerwood and QHotels’ long-term desire to increase golf participation numbers at a junior level.

One of 11 resorts across England and Scotland in the QHotels’ golf collection, the venue is part of the group’s drive to get more youngsters playing the game and this spring announced free memberships for juniors as part of its new QFairway club – the country’s most flexible golf membership.

Available to children aged 15 and under, all juniors will receive a free membership when they sign up to the enterprising new club at the resort, providing their parent or guardian also has adult membership at the same time.

The Westerwood will also present each youngster with a complimentary seven-iron from the MKids range when they join to practice their skills, thanks to its partnership with The Masters Golf Company.

The multi-award-winning, four and five-star QHotels collection offers championship-standard courses in unique resort locations.

The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort is situated in acres of spectacular grounds, with a golf course co-designed by one of the world’s greatest golfers: Severiano Ballesteros. Working with the equally revered golf designer Dave Thomas, the legendary Spaniard created a course that is as challenging as it is beautiful, as it meanders through silver birches, firs and heather, offering stunning views towards the picturesque Campsie Hills.

The signature hole, the par-three 15th – created by Ballesteros and known as the Waterfall hole – requires a tee-shot from an elevated tee to a green surrounded by a 60ft rock face. It’s not for the faint hearted and nor are the undulating moorland greens which test one’s mettle when standing over those nervy four-foot putts.
