Penrith expands PGA Pro team to enhance junior programme

1.34pm 3rd May 2022 - Growing the Game

Penrith Golf Hub has expanded its team of PGA Professionals with the appointment of Ellie Broome, who has been tasked with taking the Lake District venue’s junior programme ‘to the next level’.

Broome, 23, will be joining Penrith on May 9 from nearby Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club, where she has been an integral member of the teaching staff for two years.

Penrith launched its new junior pathway in February, with an incentive programme for the juniors to get involved with individual lessons and skills testing, in addition to its current Saturday morning roll-up sessions for all ages and abilities.

Part of Broome’s new strategy, created with Hub Directors Andrew Pickering and Lee Edwards, is to design a more structured method for youngsters who wish to progress their golf. Comprising one-to-one teaching, which will chart individual progress, group sessions, and a series of skills challenges. The new initiative will encourage those who wish to develop beyond the standard Saturday morning session and attempt to take their game further.

“We are always keen to encourage children of any age and background to enjoy the game and we now have a 40-strong junior section, which is growing year-on-year,” said Pickering. “Last year, we were particularly proactive in developing the ‘junior drive’ and our new initiative will hopefully see even more talented young golfers advancing their game.

“Focused teaching, led by Ellie, will give these youngsters more precise methods of learning based on their individual needs, and a sense of achievement with higher levels of attainment as they develop.  As one of the very few female teaching professionals in the country, we’re delighted Ellie has chosen to join us.”

Broome will also be helping to develop Penrith’s 60-strong ladies’ section, offering one-to-one coaching sessions and a six-week beginners’ course with planned clinics for specific areas of golf tutoring, such as the short game and putting.

Turning professional in 2018, Broome is a US Kids Certified Coach and has spent the past two years focusing on growing the game with specific junior and ladies’ sessions.  In 2020, she launched EJB Golf, and over that period, has introduced more than 80 juniors to the game, as well as 50 women.

“It is very unusual to have an all-female golfing class with a female PGA professional, so I am excited to be able to offer that environment at Penrith,” said Broome. “The Hub is renowned across the north of England for its amazing teaching facilities and pioneering technology, as well as its experienced team. I’m delighted that I will soon be one of the team and I’m keen to take my own coaching skills to the next level, surrounded by seasoned professionals.”

Situated just off junction 40 on the M6, Penrith Golf Hub boasts a 9-hole, par-3 course and a 14-bay covered driving range with Toptracer. It also has a custom-fitting studio, an indoor putting studio and a golf store.
