Sixty new golfers from all round North Wales enjoyed a special event with thousands of pounds worth of prizes and help from Ladies European Tour star Amy Boulden.

The New2Golf Summer Swing event at Maesdu Golf Club attracted 24 men and 36 ladies from different golf clubs in North Wales including, Wrexham, Nefyn, Maesdu, Denbigh, Holywell, Conwy, St Melyd, North Wales, Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr to play in the seven hole competition.

Former Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year Boulden was on hand to hit everyone’s first shot on the short Par 3 opening hole to prevent any first tee nerves for these New2golfers, while the main prizes of pendants for the ladies and cuff links for the men were donated by Clogau Gold.

Sandra Helme from North Wales won the Ladies prize, with Denbigh’s Linda Thompson in second and Toni Jones of Wrexham third, while Wayne Harris from Rhyl won the Men’s award with Holywell’s Paul Harrison and Gerald Bromilow second and third respectively.

Peter Forsyth, also from Holywell, had his ball hit closest to the pin by Amy so he won a brand new Mercedez Benz car to drive around in for a long weekend courtesy of Mercedez Benz garage in Llandudno Junction.

There was also a nearest the line competition for the straightest tee shot, won by Sarah Moss of Maesdu, while the pork pies at the finish were provided by The Ham Bones in Llandudno and there were also some goodies for all competitors from the Ladies European Tour and Golf Development Wales.

Maesdu golf club provided courtesy of the course for the event, while Principality Building Society also helped sponsor the Golf Development Wales event. GDW Ambassador Boulden was on hand at the course where she learned to play golf.

“The day went really well and I hope the event encouraged everyone to play more golf, to just enjoy the game and have fun,” said North Wales community golf development officer Kim Boulden.

Maesdu member Chris Drew commented, “Your New2 Golf Summer Swing gives people chance to meet up again under what is more extended and relaxed circumstances than the original 4-week sessions. Thanks for creating this opportunity.”

Sandra Pierce added, “Today was a special day for me. After two and a half weeks of being extremely poorly and seven days in Glan Clwyd this time last week wa sa distant dream to be stood on the tee. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Golf was a shocker but I feel truly blessed.”
