A new €6 million investment programme aimed at creating a lasting legacy from major golf events, including next year’s Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Limerick, has been announced by the Irish government.

The Golf Legacy Infrastructure Investment Programme will build on the success of existing Sport Ireland-funded and Golf Ireland-operated participation programmes to support the development of low-cost, publicly accessible golf facilities in Ireland, including adventure golf, short game practice areas and short courses.

Patrick O’Donovan, the Irish government’s Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, who is also the parliamentary representative for Limerick, announced the programme, saying that the Ryder Cup presents a huge opportunity for Limerick, but its impact must extend far beyond the event itself.

He said: “Next year, the eyes of the sporting world will be on Adare and on Limerick for what is expected to be the biggest sporting event ever staged in Ireland. “I want to make sure we use that opportunity to create a lasting legacy. This €6 million programme is about opening golf up to more people and supporting facilities that make it easier and more affordable for people to try the game. For Limerick, hosting the Ryder Cup is a source of enormous pride. But the real legacy will be what remains in our communities long after the final putt is made.”

Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly said: “Golf continues to grow in Ireland, and this investment reflects our commitment to ensuring that it remains inclusive and sustainable. Through the Golf Legacy Infrastructure Investment Programme, we are creating more opportunities to experience the game, while supporting clubs and communities to develop facilities for members and non-members. With major golf events providing a platform to inspire and attract new participants, this investment is about building pathways into golf and strengthening foundations for the future.”

The first round of the programme opens on 17 August, with applications closing on September 25. Individual projects are expected to receive funding of between €100,000 and €300,000.
