Gordon McKie, who served as just the ninth ‘Keeper of the Green’ for the Old Course at St Andrews, has announced that he has left his current role as greenkeeping operations manager for St Andrews Links Trust.
McKie started his career as the deputy head greenkeeper at Tain Golf Club in the Highlands from 1990-1995, before joining St Andrews Links Trust. He had spells as head greenkeeper on both the Eden and New Courses before taking over as Course Manager of the Old Course in 2007 and staying in that role until 2023.
Over the past few years, McKie, a national board director for greenkeeping body BIGGA, has served as greenkeeping operations manager for St Andrews Links Trust.
Writing on Linkedin on October 10, McKie commented: “Yesterday marked my final day at St Andrews Links. After 30 years at St Andrews Links, I’m moving on to begin a new chapter in my life and career. It’s been an incredible journey and a privilege to work at the Home of Golf.
“From preparing The Old Course for the 2010, 2015 and 2022 Open Championships, to supporting major projects across the Links, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside talented and dedicated colleagues who care deeply about the craft of greenkeeping.
“In recent years, I’ve also had the opportunity to recruit, train and support the next generation of greenkeepers – something I’ve truly valued and will continue to champion wherever my path leads.
“Thank you to everyone I’ve worked with over the years for your support, collaboration and friendship. I’m excited for what comes next and look forward to staying connected.”
