Second course for Croatia

9.15am 7th February 2002 - Courses

Swan Golf Designs, professional golf course architects based in Essex are to design Croatia’s second golf course, to be built close to the centre of Zagreb, the country’s capital, on the banks of the River Sava.

The project, an eighteen hole club course and a nine hole executive course is to be known as Golf and Country Club Zagreb. It will also feature some residential development and range and golf academy.

The Practice, currently working in some eighteen countries, employs a Croatian national Ljubica Jovetic, a graduate of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, who will be the project architect for the design work. Jovetic is her country’s only qualified golf course architect..

She says, “I am very pleased that we should be appointed again in my native country to design this, the second course, and proud that I can contribute to Croatia’s development in this way as a professional architect.”

Howard Swan designed Croatia’s first golf course at Dolina Kardinala Golf Club in 1997/98, a 27 hole complex which has already hosted the Croatian Open and some pro am tournaments. He believes that the country has a considerable future in the game, particularly on the coastline, which is recognised as being one of Europe’s most beautiful.

Work at Golf and Country Club Zagreb will commence in April 2002 with the construction of the range, academy and executive course. The eighteen hole course will be built during 2003 and the whole complex is scheduled to open in Summer 2004.
