Jordan Henderson returned to Wearside last Saturday to launch a major new cancer charity, the Eileen Smith Foundation. The Liverpool and England star met fans at the George Washington Golf Club, officially opening the new state-of-the-art, £500,000 driving range and academy. Until the end of June 2015 the George Washington Golf Club are offering a free basket of 25 range balls for all new visitors to the range. This offer is available daily from the Golf Pro Shop.

Eileen, a relation of the Henderson family, died from cancer earlier this year, but the Foundation in her name will not only keep her memory alive, but provide support for cancer patients by offering free transport to hospital for treatment.

Jordan’s father, Brian, himself a survivor of cancer, said: “The charity is named after my mother-in-law who died from the illness last month.

The Foundation aims to provide free transport through volunteer drivers for those suffering from this dreadful illness.

Former Sunderland midfielder Jordan was only too happy to be part of the Foundation Launch at the George Washington Hotel where Sun Fm marked the occasion by broadcasting live from the grounds. Jordan, who is set to link up with the England first-team squad later this week, tried out the new driving range, with the Mercure George Washington Hotel, Golf & Spa looking to donate thousands of pounds to the cause.

Jordan said: “It’s a great cause and I’d like to thank everyone who turned up to offer their support. Any donation to cancer charities is worthwhile, but I like the fact that this one has a specific area where it plans to help.”

As part of the launch, Jordan donated a signed England shirt worn at the Brazil 2014 World Cup in 2014; a signed Liverpool FC 2014/2015 season shirt; plus a Sunderland

AFC 2014/2015 season signed shirt by the whole team.

More information on the charity can be found on the Foundation’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/EileensCharity where donations can also be made.

The new range at the George Washington Golf Club comprises of 14 luxury heated bays, featuring 6 bays with ‘Power Tee’ automation, plus both an internal and external golf teaching and custom fit facility, with the latest Flightscope technology as well as new, relaxing half way house. The club will be offering a loyalty discount card offering a host of benefits.

This new driving range and academy project will provide the very best practice facilities for golfers of all ages and ability in the North East. The Golf Club will launch its junior and ladies group teaching academies shortly, which they believe to be two keys areas in the development of golf as a sport.

This wonderful new driving range compliments the George Washington Golf Club which also offers an 18 hole championship golf course; Par 3 course; putting and chipping area and a new clubhouse. The Golf Club now offers the very best facilities to every level.
