Pinheirinho Comporta, one of Europe’s most anticipated new golf destinations, announced its arrival on the world stage by hosting the inaugural Portugal Legends Championship – the first chapter of an ambitious resort and residential masterplan.

Set among 400 hectares of coastal estate framed by native umbrella pines and Europe’s longest sandy beach, the 18-hole course designed by Jorge Santana da Silva drew widespread acclaim from an elite field that included Ryder Cup captains and Major winners.

Paul McGinley, the 2014 European Ryder Cup captain, said: “The golf course is excellent. There’s lots of undulation which gives nice views. It’s also got the lovely weather and the beach close by, so it has loads of potential. It really ticks every box.”

Michael Campbell, the 2005 US Open champion, said: “It was a lot of fun to play. The greens are great, and I loved the structure of the holes and the bunkering. All in all it’s already one of my favourite courses.”

Johan Edfors, a three-time winner on the DP World Tour who has won twice this year on the Legends Tour, finished third at Pinheirinho. He said: “It’s amazing here, so beautiful. It’s an impressive layout and the course is in fantastic shape. I had the whole family here and we’ve all enjoyed a great week.”

Officially open from March 2027, the 6,530-metre, par-72 course offers a sensational golfing experience for players of all abilities, featuring expansive, contoured green complexes and dramatic elevated tees, including the par-3 17th with an iconic island green.

Local golf course architect Santana da Silva has blended it harmoniously into the coastal pine forest, rolling hills and natural lakes, earning comparisons with the world’s great heathland and sandbelt clubs.

Pinheirinho Comporta’s new golf course officially opens for play next Spring, but its hosting of last week’s Portugal Legends Championship shows that is already in tournament condition

A contemporary clubhouse and restaurant designed by Jacobsen Arquitetura, crafted from natural materials, gives sweeping views over the course from almost every angle, with floor-to-ceiling glass and spacious terraces.

Staysure Legends Tour Managing Director David Adams said: “All week I heard nothing but high praise for the course and the venue overall. The players were blown away by the layout, the conditioning and the warm welcome they received. It’s rare to have an opportunity to compete on a brand new course that has not yet officially opened, so it was a great privilege and we look forward to returning for years to come.”

Luis Gamboa, Chief Operating Officer of VIC Properties, the developer behind Pinheirinho Comporta, said: “To hear such overwhelming praise for the course and its conditioning is an incredible validation of our vision. This tournament is just the first chapter of what will become one of Europe’s most exceptional, sustainable resort communities.”

António Castelo, Director of Golf at the venue, added: “We set out to present the course in immaculate condition for this event, so to have players of this calibre speak so highly of it is the ultimate reward for the team. Their reaction gives us tremendous momentum as we prepare to welcome our first members and guests.”

The golf course is the catalyst for a multi-year mixed-use masterplan by VIC Properties across the estate, where 95 per cent of the land will remain protected. The development will introduce residential and global hospitality offerings, including Six Senses Comporta Hotel and Residences, alongside Pin apartments, and individual plots for turnkey and bespoke architect-designed villas, together with further dining, retail, outdoor sports and nature-led experiences.

Golf membership will offer full access to the world-class facilities and a wealth of privileges and world-class service.
