Faldo strengthens Irish links

12.30am 15th April 2005 - Course Development

Faldo Design has completed courses in 12 different countries and with several other projects in the pipeline, the company is fast becoming recognised as one of the most respected and sought-after firms in the industry.
As well as the diverse range of projects that are currently under construction, Faldo Design has also been commissioned to undertake the renovation of the Old Links course at Ballyliffin Golf Club on the north west coast of County Donegal. Nick Faldo has had strong ties with the club for a number of years and Faldo Design was the obvious choice when the club decided to enhance and generally upgrade its layout late last year.
“When I first visited Ballyliffin back in the ‘nineties, I had intended to play just nine holes, but I liked the course so much that I had to stay for the full eighteen,” said Faldo. “The layout’s only obvious weakness was the quality of its bunkering, but we are now relishing the opportunity of rectifying that, and I really believe that when our plans are fully implemented the Old Links will realise its potential and become a genuinely world class golf course.”
The essential aim is to improve the course’s strategic qualities by way of a complete re-bunkering programme. Faldo Design will also create some new oceanside tees to emphasise better the natural beauty of the situation. The front nine holes have already been renovated and the reaction from members and visitors to the club has been extremely positive. Once completed (the target date is March 2006) it is predicted that the finished course will sit comfortably in the select company of truly classic Irish links courses.
“Ballyliffin Golf Club is delighted to be partnered with Faldo Design. We are very impressed by Nick’s creativity and his team’s professionalism and dedication to the task,” said John Farren, Ballyliffin Golf Club’s general manager. “We feel the finished product will be a landmark classic links course – one which will rank amongst the very best in the world. We believe the renovated Old Links, together with its sister course, The Glashedy, will give Ballyliffin an unrivalled 36 hole championship links complex.”
