Ogbourne Downs Golf Club in Wiltshire has been collaborating with Master Greenkeeper Greg Evans to develop a strategic plan aimed at restoring the character of its 6,422-yard downland golf course.

Founded in 1907, the club started out life as North Wilts Golf Club, before changing its name to Swindon Golf Club in 1927 after it moved to a new site in Ogbourne St George. The new course was designed Fred Hawtree and five-time Open Champion JH Taylor. The club’s name was changed to Ogbourne Downs in 1995 to better reflect its location.

Initially engaged in 2019 under a full management contract, Greg Evans Golf Course Solutions arrangement included weekly visits and support for the greens staff in creating an effective agronomic plan.

The strategic plan aims to future-proof Ogbourne Downs by optimising tee and bunker positioning

In 2022, the club appointed Eddie Campbell as Head Greenkeeper. Campbell now works closely with Evans, who has transitioned to a monthly consultancy role, focusing on fine-tuning the agronomic plan. This plan is primarily dedicated to encouraging the growth of fescue, particularly on the greens, to enhance their natural downland features.

The strategic plan aims to future-proof Ogbourne Downs in the short, medium and long-term by optimising tee and bunker positioning and addressing the overpopulation of shrubs and trees, which detract from the course’s natural downland character. Additionally, upgrading the irrigation system for the greens and tees to improve performance will be incorporated into the plans.

Since Campbell’s appointment significant efforts have been made to widen and increase the playing areas, restoring their former shapes and sizes.

The club’s management committee, led by Greens Chair Scott Taylor, is committed to maintaining and enhancing the course’s distinctive characteristics for the enjoyment of members and visitors alike.
