Detailed design work on the East Course at the new Vattanac Golf Resort in Cambodia’s capital city is now complete, with golf course construction expected to get underway on the Faldo Design project in 2012.
Vattanac Properties appointed Sir Nick Faldo and his team to create two 18-hole championship-standard courses, 15 km from the centre ofPhnom Penh. The golf will sit at the heart of a luxury resort encompassing a state-of-the-art clubhouse, hotel, wedding banquet facility and extensive real estate, with most properties enjoying spectacular waterfront locations.
“The site presented us with an exciting challenge of creativity and imagination,” said the six-time Major Champion. “Inspiration for our design came from a number of different sources including aerial views of the paddy fields, the stunning temples at Angkor Watt, wooden houses close to the site and the formation of the paddy field basins themselves.”
“The brief for the East Course was to create a golf course accessible to all, yet capable of hosting a tournament, therefore built-in vantage points for spectators throughout the course were a prerequisite,” added Faldo Design Director of Architecture, Andrew Haggar. “We knew that we had to design a landscape and an identity for the site and at the same time create an iconic golf course.”
Vattanac Golf Resort in Cambodia is one of five Asian projects currently being undertaken by Faldo Design, with work also underway on other sites in India,Vietnam and China.
