March 19th is the deadline for golf clubs throughout the British Isles to enter the Rules of Golf Quiz, again sponsored by Royal & SunAlliance and supported by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club.
The Rules of Golf Quiz, now in its seventh year, tests club golfers’ knowledge on the Rules of Golf and continues to underline its popularity with a record entry of 453 teams taking part in 2000.
Hot favourites in last year’s final were Stone Golf Club from Staffordshire, the 1999 winners and finalists on no fewer than four occasions, but on the night it was Banchory who ran out convincing winners and took the honours in the ‘Big Room’ of the R&A Clubhouse.
The quiz will again be staged on a knock-out basis, starting in April, leading to County Finals in September and Regional Finals in October. The six winning teams at the Regional Finals travel to St. Andrews for the Final on 18th November in the R&A Clubhouse.
Thousands of questions taking in every aspect of the Rules have been prepared by David Rickman, the Secretary of the R&A’s Rules of Golf Committee, and his staff. These vary in difficulty with straightforward questions being addressed to individuals and more probing questions on the decisions addressed to the team as a whole.
Commenting at the 2001 launch, David Rickman said: “The Quiz has proved most popular over the years with the questions designed to be challenging but not too difficult. We have found that the Quiz has not only created increased awareness of the Rules but has also generated lasting friendship between clubs.”
Titleist are donating over 1500 PTS Wound golf balls which will go to the winning teams and the runners-up in the County Finals, while members of the Regional winning teams will each receive Footjoy Aqualites, a Royal & SunAlliance bag cover and a Special Edition of the Rules of Golf.
The trip to St. Andrews for the finalists will include overnight accommodation, the Final in the famous ‘Big Room’ of the R&A Clubhouse, dinner later that evening in the Club’s private dining room and golf on one of St. Andrews’ courses the following day. The winners on the night will also receive tickets to the following year’s Open Championship where they will receive Corporate Hospitality from Royal & SunAlliance during their visit.
“Golf Monthly” will again promote the Quiz and carry editorial and results. Entries which are open to all clubs in Great Britain and Ireland close on 19th March 2001.
