The Scottish Golf Union, the governing body for men’s amateur golf in Scotland, is now seeking nominations to recruit a new non-executive Performance Director on the Board.

This is a highly important role within the SGU’s overall structure and the key vacancy is to be filled at the next Annual General Meeting inJanuary 2012.

In 2002, the SGU restructured its governance to be managed by a Board of Directors to ensure that appropriately qualified people are in place to take Scottish golf forward in the future and implement the strategy and business plan of the organisation.

John Fraser, a Physical Education teacher by training with a strong background in promoting a wide range of sports at all levels of ability, including elite performance, is standing down from the post after a successful four-year tenure and another high-calibre, multi-skilled replacement is now sought.

Douglas Connon, Chairman of the SGU, said: “The Board appointments are non-executive and not remunerated outside of expenses and were staggered so as to avoid wholesale changes to the Board in any one year. They were also time bound to ensure a reasonable rotation of people undertaking the roles. There will be a vacancy on the SGU Board that requires to be filled at the next Annual General Meeting in January. The specific area of responsibility for the non-executive position is that of Performance, encompassing all aspects of performance golf.”

The new Director of the Board, contributing to the Performance Pathway and International Teams, will be responsible, together with other Directors and the executive, to develop and implement an effective strategy to foster, maintain and further the success of Scottish international teams.

All Scotland’s golf clubs and Areas are being encouraged to put forward nominations of individuals for the post. Nominated individuals must be a member of an SGU affiliated club, with applications to be submitted by Friday, October 28, 2011, for the attention of Hamish Grey, SGU Chief Executive.

The nominations will be considered by a three-person panel made up of SGU Board members. The nomination panel will short list and, if appropriate, interview candidates for the position prior to the Board recommending the preferred candidate to the Annual General Meeting in January 2012.
