Alliance Trust guide ‘opens up’ the Carnoustie championship course

12.05am 17th July 2007 - Travel

Dundee-based investment group Alliance Trust has launched a special hole-by-hole guide to the championship golf course, ‘Carnoustie Opened Up’, which shares the knowledge of some of Carnoustie’s real experts, its caddies, its golfers and other privileged observers.

This one-off guide, which is available free to download on www.alliancetrust.co.uk/golf , takes you on a unique trip around the course that is considered the hardest challenge of The Open. It gives readers an insight into the course and to the local area, offering a collection of facts and stories that you will not find together anywhere else.

For instance, who was the only player to lead the Open on the first day at Carnoustie, yet fail to make the cut? Which player was bitten by a rat at the 10th hole in 1968 as he was looking for his ball in the rough and was so badly shaken he failed to break 90? Which is the only hole that Carnoustie course record holder Alan Tait bogeyed when he made his astounding round of 64? (For the record, that’s Australian Rod Pampling, Britain’s John Morgan and the 16th hole.)

Tips and stories in the guide include anecdotes from and about people who really know the course. It tells you what you ought to know about Carnoustie and some things you’d never guess.

Read about golfing legends such as 1953 champion Ben Hogan and ‘The Golden Bear’ Jack Nicklaus. First-hand tales from Scottish club pro David Huish, course record holder Alan Tait, renowned sports journalist Arthur Montford, golf photographer Donald Ford and others give this guide the authentic flavour of Carnoustie.

Alan Harden, Alliance Trust chief executive officer says, “At Alliance Trust we are proud of our connection to a special part of Scotland that is so rich in golf, its history and its sporting excellence. Through our guide we hope to give you an entertaining insight into the place where our roots go back for generations.”

Alliance Trust is also offering the chance to win a two night stay for two people, including dinner and a round of golf for two on the Championship course at Carnoustie.
