No mobiles at The Open Championship

12.01am 15th July 2007 - Travel

The R&A is asking spectators to leave their mobile phones at home before travelling to this year’s Open Championship, being held at Carnoustie Golf Links from 15 – 22 July.

The ban on mobiles that comes into effect today follows a number of incidents at last year’s Open, when some of the players had to step back from shots because of mobile phone noise.

Half of the expected 180,000 spectators at Carnoustie have purchased tickets in advance and have received information through the post on the first time mobile phone ban. Ticket advertising in press, travel and tourism websites and car park signage also carry information on the new ‘no mobiles’ policy.

Anyone who arrives at the pay gates with a mobile phone will be offered secure phone storage at no charge, for collection of the phones as they leave the course. Extra payphones have been located within the main public catering and merchandise areas.
