The BBC has launched a national offensive, in association with the Golf Foundation and four other British sports bodies, to hit back against the sharp decline in teenage sport. The new TV series called “Get Your Kit On” represents an unprecedented drive to tear young people away from their games consoles. Apart from golf other sports to be promoted include football, tennis and athletics.
The programme will offer free sporting “taster” sessions throughout this summer to the nation’s 11-16 year olds. Fresh research underscores the scale of the task. Among girls there is disdain for sport – in a new BBC study one in six girls said that they had given up extra curricular sport by the time they reached the age of 14.
“Get Your Kit On2 will be aimed at both sexes and seeks to rekindle interest in known sports as well as inspire children to play a sport they may not have considered before. Michael Round, the executive director of the Golf Foundation said, “We’ll teach all youngsters the basics of the game as well as rules and tips. The Golf Foundation is committed to access for all.”
