The 8th hole of the 103-year-old Jubilee Course is now only yards away from the high tide level, following severe erosion of the dunes during storms last winter. The defences to be put in place are a combination of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ options. The dunes between the estuary and the golf courses are environmentally sensitive and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Putting effective defences in place is a matter of urgency

The Open is a huge operation which places considerable pressure on an extremely valuable and internationally renowned local environment and a sand dune system of some fragility. The golfing authorities have done much to ensure that The Open takes place with minimal long-term impact to the Links and the neighbouring Eden Estuary – a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation
