Wales rewards ‘Golf as it should be’

12.30am 22nd September 2005 - Travel

Three companies have been short listed for the prestigious ‘Golf as it should be’ award in this year’s National Tourism Awards for Wales. A panel of independent judges will now interview all the contenders before a final decision is announced at the awards ceremony on 20th October when BBC’s Huw Edwards will reveal the winners for 2005. Wales Golf Vacations in Swansea; Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort in Hensol and Trefloyne in Tenby have reached the final for this prestigious award, sponsored by HSBC.
Jonathan Jones, chief executive of the Wales Tourist Board, said, “We were extremely impressed by the number and quality of entries. Short listing for each category was a tough process and the judges now have an even more difficult decision to select one winner.
“Wales is a strong golfing nation and this sport is becoming increasingly important in the lead up to us hosting the Ryder Cup in 2010. This will undoubtedly result in long term benefits to the whole of Wales including a significant boost in the tourism industry.”
Stephanie Metson, marketing manager for The Vale Resort, said, “This is fantastic news for the Vale Resort team. It has certainly been a busy two years for us working towards providing outstanding facilities to make golf as it should be in Wales. Being short-listed for this award is real recognition of all our hard work and commitment. The £250,000 investment of our new golf clubhouse and facilities, coupled with the opening of the Wales National course two years ago, has received rave reviews from all our golfing visitors. In addition, we were delighted to play host to the FIRSTPLUS Challenge Tour earlier this year, which is part of a three year deal with Ryder Cup Wales and sees us hosting the Seniors in 2006. We are really dedicated to working alongside WTB in promoting golf in Wales and are hopeful that we will be successful.” www.vale-hotel.com
Sarah Beynon from Trefloyne said: “We are so excited about being short listed for “Golf as it should be” as it demonstrates out vision for Trefloyne is impacting on this new and exciting market. The ethos is “Enjoy” – the golf, the food, the ambience, the experience – please come again!!! It would be fantastic to win this prestigious award and encourage the team at Trefloyne to further develop “Golf for All”. www.trefloynegolfcourse.co.uk
Dylan Williams from Wales Golf Vacations, who set up the company with Jon Wall in 2002, to offer tailor-made golf vacation packages to clients across the world, said, “We are a young company who started from scratch so just being short listed is a huge boost to morale. We are looking forward to attending the awards and hopefully picking up the winning prize!” www.walesgolfvacations.com
The awards night will mark the climax of a three day event, where more than 300 buyers from the UK, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australasia meet to network at “Showcase Wales” to be held in Cardiff’s City Hall.
Showcase Wales will provide a shop window for the increasingly upmarket and specialised Welsh visitor sector, which is designed to promote the £2.5billion a year industry to international decision makers.
