Tickets are now on sale for the 2011 Walker Cup Match at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club on 10 & 11 September. Daily tickets cost £25 for adults and £10 for juveniles aged 16 or under.
The 43rd playing of the biennial contest will see Great Britain and Ireland face the USA on Royal Aberdeen’s Balgownie Links. GB&I will be attempting to wrestle back the trophy from the USA, who retained it on home soil in 2009 with a 16 ½ – 9 ½ victory at Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania.
On each of the two days of competition, there will be four morning foursomes matches, followed by afternoon singles. On Saturday 10 September, there will be eight singles matches, while on Sunday, all 10 players from each team will go head-to-head.
Over the past few years, notable recent players include 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Rickie Fowler and current world number six Rory McIlroy, both of whom played in the 2007 Walker Cup Match at Royal County Down. Two years later, Fowler earned four points from a possible four, along with the reigning US Amateur Champion, Peter Uihlein, who is expected to compete at Royal Aberdeen, this year.
Other former Walker Cup stars include three-time Major Champion Padraig Harrington, current world number three Luke Donald and multiple Major-winners Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
“The Walker Cup has witnessed some of golf’s greatest champions in the early stages of their careers, and this year’s contest is sure to be no different,” said Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A. “With spectators coursing down the fairways and the world’s elite amateurs just feet away, the Walker Cup creates an atmosphere unlike any other golf event.”
Grandstands will be erected, offering spectators the best views of the action, and catering facilities will be available.
