10.40am 12th October 2021 - Travel

Golfers across Europe have shown how keen they are to experience the Mediterranean’s prime sustainable destination, with places for this year’s Messinia Pro-Am at Costa Navarino having sold out months ahead of the event taking place.

A record 75 teams from all over the continent will gather in Greece’s south-west Peloponnese from November 24-27 to compete in the fifth annual Messinia Pro-Am, which for the first time will feature golf across three courses including the world’s first ‘International Olympic Academy Golf Course’ – launched in partnership with the International Olympic Academy and the Hellenic Olympic Committee – which is one of the two new José María Olazábal-designed courses at Navarino Hills.

Sanctioned by the Confederation of Professional Golf and held under the auspices of the PGAs of Greece and the Hellenic Golf Federation, this year’s line-up in the 54-hole international event will feature entries from 20 different countries including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, The Netherlands and the UK, as well as the host nation, Greece.

Professionals will join amateurs and celebrity golfers to compete on Costa Navarino’s award-winning The Dunes Course, The Bay Course and the International Olympic Academy Golf Course for a total prize fund of €50,000.

An established part of the global golf calendar, the Messinia Pro-Am also includes a fascinating programme of themed events and dinners with the emphasis on fun and friendship. As in previous years, the social side of the tournament features a charity evening for SOS Children’s Villages, and the prizegiving ceremony.

Named as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Development’ at the 2020 World Golf Awards, Navarino Hills is one of Europe’s most eagerly awaited golf developments. Situated over 125 hectares overlooking the historic Bay of Navarino and the Ionian Sea, it features two 18-hole courses, the first of which is the International Olympic Academy Golf Course, measuring 6,366m in length. The second course will measure 6,280m.

When both Navarino Hills courses open to all visitors in spring 2022, Costa Navarino will offer its guests four signature golf courses to enjoy within a maximum distance of 13km from each other, further enhancing its status as one of Europe’s leading golf destinations.

The official carrier of the fifth annual Messinia Pro-Am is this year once again AEGEAN Airlines – www.aegeanair.com –  a member of Star Alliance, the strongest global aviation alliance. AEGEAN, the award-winning airline (Skytrax Best Regional Airline, 4-star COVID-19 Airline Safety, etc) is in partnership with Costa Navarino, the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG) and PGA of Greece and offers free of charge tickets for the Professionals, special airline ticket prices for Messinia Pro-Am participants as well as other added benefits such as free transfers of the golf bags.

The event organizer and official travel partner is Erasmus, with Hertz the official car transfer partner and Alpha Bank, Vodafone and Kyvernitis, the tournament’s silver sponsors. Other partners include AMPS, Poseidonia restaurant, Gancia, Jose Cuervo, Glenfiddich, NISSOS, The Wagon Bar & Events, Vourakis and Kayak ice creams.
