Cabbies get the golfing ‘knowledge‘

7.50am 8th April 2008 - Travel

With The Open expected to attract more than 230,000 visitors to Merseyside, the region’s taxi-drivers will be busier than ever and free ‘golf workshops’ will equip them with the latest golfing know-how to keep passengers entertained.

Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa’s team of experts will provide free two-hour ‘golf inductions’ to interested taxi drivers as part of its focus on making golf accessible to all.

Matthew Allen-Chilman, head of golf at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa, commented, “We’ll be running a series of knowledge workshops which give cabbies tutelage on the main golf terminology, background on the Merseyside golfers taking part, an explanation of golf scoring and a free round of golf to put their knowledge into practice.

“The Open’s arrival in Sefton is a real coup and we want to make sure that the game is accessible to everyone – not just the professionals and golf stalwarts.”

He concludes, “We all know that the city’s cabbies are amongst some of the most friendly in the UK and with some extra help we’re going to make them the most golf-savvy too.”

Cabbies interested in taking the golf knowledge at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa should contact The Golf Shop at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa on 01704 875 699. The workshops will take place on 14th and 21st May 2008.

Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa is situated just 3.5 miles away from Royal Birkdale making it the perfect base for visiting The Open 2008. Its corporate hospitality package starts from £195 per person and includes official Open entrance pass, transfer to and from the event, champagne breakfast, gourmet lunch and complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks.

Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa received £10million investment transforming the club into a complete resort destination. Its 62 bedroom hotel overlooking the parkland and 18-hole course opened last year, and a new nine hole par three golf course and short game practice area, as well as a spa and extensive leisure and conferencing facilities will open in spring this year.

Its PGA golf academy will open in April and is accessible to both professional golfers and those who have never picked up a golf club, but want to learn how to play the game.
