A trailblazing apprentice greenkeeper from Hadlow College in Kent has become the first student in the UK to complete a new apprenticeship standard.

Max Sutton, 20, an apprentice greenkeeper at London Golf Club in Kent and apprentice at Hadlow College, navigated his way through the rigorous End Point Assessment of the new Golf Greenkeeping Apprenticeship Standard (Version 1.1) with flying colours.

His assessment, awarded by Lantra, tested every facet of his greenkeeping expertise. From a comprehensive knowledge exam to an in-depth professional discussion and practical assessments. Max had to demonstrate not just technical ability, but also precision, diligence, and a sharp eye for detail.

His skills were put to the test across a range of core greenkeeping tasks, including tractor operations, mowing, hole changing, bunker and tee ground maintenance, and even grass identification, all while maintaining the highest health and safety standards.Beyond the practical work, Max also compiled an extensive portfolio of evidence, showcasing his knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours.

His hard work and dedication culminated in a landmark achievement, officially recognised by Lantra as the first completion of this new standard in the UK.

Reflecting on his success, Max says: “I was thrilled to achieve the qualification. The exam really challenged my knowledge and skills, and I hope to use this as a stepping stone to further my career.”  His efforts have already paid off, since qualifying Max has been promoted from trainee greenkeeper to a qualified member of staff at the London Golf Club.

Anthony Stockwell, Senior Skills Trainer at Hadlow College, praised Max’s achievement, adding: “I’m delighted for Max. He has shown drive, determination, and a real passion for the industry. To be the first in the UK to achieve this qualification is a fantastic accomplishment. At just 20 years old I couldn’t be prouder to have had him as a student and he has a great future ahead of him.”

Max’s success not only marks a personal milestone but also sets the bar for future apprentices. As the first to complete this new standard, he has paved the way for the next generation of greenkeepers striving for excellence in the industry.”

Hadlow College is part of North Kent College, one of the country’s leading apprenticeship providers, and a range of apprenticeships are offered at its campus.
