Ryder Cup Europe has been announced as the new sponsor for the Welsh National PGA Championship. The 36-hole event will be staged next month at the stunning Southerndown course near Bridgend on 10 and 11. October

PGA chief executive Sandy Jones has described Ryder Cup Europe’s backing as a huge boost for Welsh golf and ensures the continued staging of a tournament that dates back to 1904.

“This tournament is really important to us,” said Jones. “Twelve months ago we were looking forward to being at Celtic Manor where we enjoyed one of the most memorable Ryder Cups ever.

“In difficult economic times sponsorship is always difficult so I’m delighted that George O’Grady, with the backing of Ryder Cup Europe, is backing it.

“I’m particularly pleased for the PGA professionals, many of whom worked hard to ensure the Ryder Cup legacy inWalesby supporting its grass roots initiatives.”

The tournament has been won by a host of leading players including Ian Woosnam, Percy Alliss, Sid Mouland and Brian Huggett.

Three-time PGA Cup player Simon Edwards will defend the title he won at Royal St David’s, Harlech, and the leading non-exempt finisher will earn a place in the Welsh team for the PGAs of Europe International Team Championship at Vale do Lobo in Portugal in November plus a start in the 2012 Celtic Manor Wales Open.
