TV Channel Backs Wales Ladies Championship

7.15pm 31st May 2007 - Sponsorship & Events

S4C will sponsor the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe for the next four years, as part of its on-going support of Welsh golf.

The sponsorship is part of a wider partnership with Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Ltd, the company established to deliver Wales’s commitments as the next European Ryder Cup host nation. The Wales Ladies Championship of Europe will be played at the acclaimed Machynys Peninsular Golf and Country Club, near Llanelli between 16 and 19 August 2007.

S4C’s sponsorship follows the launch, last October, of S4C’s Golf Scholarship Fund. Scholarships to the tune of £2,500 each were awarded to two promising Welsh golfers, Tara Davies of Holyhead and Richard Merchant of Abergavenny. The scholarships, which include a master class with Ian Woosnam, are a natural fit with the successful efforts to increase the numbers and standards of people playing golf in Wales in the run up to 2010.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s director of commissioning said, “S4C is delighted to be able to support the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe, a tournament which is adding to Wales’ growing reputation as a golfing nation. S4C takes pride in its reputation as the home of Welsh sport and as Wales looks forward to hosting the 2010 Ryder Cup, S4C is delighted to be supporting golf at all levels.”

Jim Anderson, chairman and managing director of Machynys Peninsular Golf and Country Club, commented, “The Wales Ladies Championship of Europe is a world class event at a fantastic venue and it now has a top class title sponsor. Everyone involved recognises S4C’s commitment to top class Welsh sport and it’s great to have them on board.”

Chairman of Ryder Cup Wales, John Jermine, said, “The S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe has a great ring to it. We are delighted with the partnership with S4C that will benefit both the event and the wider interests of Welsh golf as we move towards 2010 and beyond.”
