As the excitement builds for the showdown in Valhalla, former winning European Ryder Cup player and captain, Sam Torrance, has launched the inaugural ‘BMW Urban Golf Cup’ a Ryder Cup themed challenge, which will take place in central London on 19th September, to coincide with the first Ryder Cup matches in the United States.
Qualification for the event, organised by BMW (official partner to the 2008 European Ryder Cup Team) will take place at leading indoor golf venues, Urban Golf Smithfield and the recently refurbished Urban Golf Soho. Members of the public have until 16th September to qualify for the event by playing six holes of Valhalla Golf Club, venue of the 37th Ryder Cup, on state-of the-art golf simulators.
Players posting the top 8 European and top 8 Americans scores will then be invited to go head-to-head at an exclusive event on Friday, 19th September, where the Ryder Cup will be screened live from Louisville.
Members of the winning team will each win a round of golf at Wentworth Club, whilst all guests, will have the chance to win a number of other prizes including a new BMW 1 Series Convertible.
Speaking at the event, Torrance, who selected the six qualifying holes, commented, “I’m delighted to launch the BMW Urban Golf Cup, which not only reflects the spirit and excitement associated with the Ryder Cup, but offers the chance for golfers to enjoy the same course as the pros. I just hit a few shots and the technology is so advanced, you almost feel like you are there.”
Commenting on Europe’s chances of retaining the Ryder Cup, he said: “European golf is in fantastic shape and we’ve got a terrific team, which combines experience, passion and some of the best players in the world today. I’ve no doubt we’re set for another thrilling contest and have a good feeling our boys will bring the cup back home.”
Peter Walker, general manager sports marketing BMW UK said, “The Ryder Cup is undoubtedly one of the worlds greatest sporting contests and BMW’s elevation earlier this year from official sponsor to partner of the event, confirms our global commitment in golf. With two more years until Celtic Manor, we wanted to host an event that united golf fans to share the excitement and show our support for the European Team. The BMW Urban Golf Cup presented a great opportunity to do just that.”
