SkyCaddie helps bogey-free Baker to victory

“The SkyCaddie is the first thing I put in the bag when I go away” said Peter Baker after sealing his eighth victory on the Legends Tour last weekend.

The Englishman used his SkyCaddie on every hole in a remarkable bogey-free week to finish six shots clear of the field in the 2025 Costa Navarino Legends Tour Trophy, in south west Greece.

With the tournament already in his pocket, even with a six-shot lead Baker faced self-imposed pressure on the 72nd hole. “I left myself with a 40 foot putt on the last, and although I already knew I had won the title, I really wanted to end the week without making bogey! Luckily I hit a lovely putt to two feet, and finished it off.”

Baker’s putter was hot all week. “I holed out well on the five and six-footers, which made a big difference” he said. “The Costa Navarino greens are fantastic, but you have to put the ball in the right spot. The SkyCaddie gives me instant yardages to the pin as well as the front and back of the green, which are completely trustworthy, and it is also good for carry distances over greenside bunkers as it shows how much room you have beyond.

“From tee to green it gives you runouts, carries and layup spots which you can’t calculate with a laser” he said. “And each night I download the following day’s pin positions directly onto my SkyCaddie.”

Baker, who was one of Europe’s top points scorers in the 1993 Ryder Cup and has 18 professional tournament victories, continued: “I wouldn’t want to play without the SkyCaddie nowadays. I have the latest PRO 5X model, which is the fastest SkyCaddie I’ve ever used, and I’m very happy with it.”

A bogey-free tournament week is phenomenally rare in golf. Baker achieved it with 14 birdies and an eagle over his three rounds for a -16 finishing total, six clear of fellow SkyCaddie user James Kingston and Thomas Gögele.

With Baker and Kingston in hot pursuit of Australia’s Scott Hend, who still tops the 2025 Legends Tour Order Of Merit, the Top Three in this season’s O.O.M all choose to use a SkyCaddie for their yardages.

SkyCaddie users have already won two tournaments on the Legends Tour this season. Last year, 12 of the 15 Legends Tour 2024 events where rangefinders were allowed were won by players using a SkyCaddie, and 80% of the Top 40 in last year’s Order Of Merit used SkyCaddie during tournament play.

“Since 2021, every Order Of Merit winner on the Legends Tour has been a SkyCaddie user” said James Holmes, Director of Sales & Operations EMEA at SkyCaddie. “It is looking good again, this season. Scott, Peter and James have all made a superb start to the year, and it’s important to note that they are using SkyCaddie as a personal choice, they are not obliged to!”

“The Legends Tour delivers world-class tournament golf where – uniquely among the major Tours – spectators can see big-name players using the same distance measurement devices as they are allowed to use in their local monthly medal. In so many ways it is such a relatable Tour to watch, if you actually go to the tournaments” he said.

“That unique aspect, plus the fact that you can get so close to Major-winners and ex-Ryder Cup stars playing some great golf, surely makes attending Legends Tour events one of the sport’s most enjoyable experiences.”

Holmes continued: “We are proud to be the Tour’s official Distance Measuring Device, and we enjoy helping Legends Tour officials to create pin sheets for each tournament day. The competitors who use SkyCaddies download the day’s pins to their rangefinders for instant yardages from anywhere on the course, even when they are behind trees or playing uphill where you can’t see the green surface.

“SkyCaddie’s comprehensive ‘eye in the sky’ yardages give you so much more than a laser, which is why the majority of Legends Tour competitors use SkyCaddie through choice during tournament play.”

But even Tour stars have to come back down to earth.

Baker immediately flew back from Greece for a full day of teaching at South Staffs GC, his home golf club.
