The Point at Polzeath, the impressively revamped complex in North Cornwall, is to become the latest golf club to host the annual Asbri Golf Cornish Festival which starts the season for the PGA in England and Wales (South West).
The sell-out event which attracts more than 400 golfers from all over Britain each year will now be played at the parkland Polzeath course as well as at the championship links venues Trevose and St Enodoc from April 2nd – 4th next year.
“The three courses are within eight miles of each other,” said The Point at Polzeath owner Jeremy Davies with a twinkle in his eye, adding “as the crow flies.” The road around the Camel Estuary is somewhat longer….
PGA Regional manager Robert Moss said: “The Point held the successful final Order of Merit event, The Race to the Point, for the first time last year. The club hosts two pro-ams and this year the Marston’s company day was held there in the Spring as well.
“The club is a great supporter of the PGA, the course is fantastic and the facilities are excellent. We shall be sorry to lose Carlyon Bay from the festival after their great contribution for three years, but they could well return in future.”
The majestic parkland venue with outstanding views overlooking Pentire Point and Newlands Island was originally known as Roserrow Golf and Country Club. Mr Davies, a former city financier and his wife Eva rescued the ailing club from administration and renamed it The Point at Polzeath.
It has been transformed through substantial investment. Architect Tim Lobb has redesigned the course originally laid out by David Feherty. The facilities include a restaurant, bar, health club, gym and swimming pool. The club was named England Golf ClubMark Club of the year for 2017.
Mr Davies, a five-handicap golfer at Trevose, Huntercombe near Henley-on-Thames and The Berkshire has spent a small fortune on improvements. He said. “Greater involvement with the PGA is another step forward and further recognition of the work of our head greenkeeper Tom Collings who was here before we took over six years ago. Tom along with Elizabeth Lehan, who manages the golf have worked tirelessly to help us turn the business around.”
“We want to raise our profile and the PGA are helping us achieve this aim. It makes sense to tie in the three North Cornwall courses. We offer a very good base, we can sleep up to 36 in our own accommodation and we look after a number of private rental properties on the complex. We look forward to welcoming everyone to The Point.”
