Morpeth duo claim SkyCaddie Pro-Captain title in Italy

A knee-knocking four-footer sealed victory for Morpeth Golf Club’s David Clark and Steve Redpath at PGA National Italy last week, in the 2022 SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge Grand Final.

And it was “very, very nervous” 12-handicapper Redpath, Captain at Morpeth GC, who faced the dreaded putt, after he and Clark had turned their week around in stunning fashion with a final-day comeback and a four-way playoff for the SkyCaddie trophy.

“We were dead last overnight, so we just kept two balls in play as much as possible, and went for everything on the greens” said David Clark, PGA Head Professional at Morpeth. “Luckily our putters got hot, we made the playoff and Steve kept his nerve to hole the winner!”

The Northumberland duo were the ultimate victors in this season’s well-supported SkyCaddie Pro-Captain event, after ten Qualifiers across the UK saw over 500 golfers compete for just 20 places in the Italy final.

“SkyCaddies have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years,” said Clark. “I used mine on all three days of the Final, and never took my laser out of the bag once. Knowing the runouts and carries off every tee is massively useful. I loved the pre-loaded pins too – very impressive!”

Hi partner, Steve Redpath, had never used a SkyCaddie before this year’s tournament. “It’s a brilliant bit of kit,” he said. “You could see the screen even in bright sunshine, and I will definitely be getting one to use from now on!”

The PGA Pro-Captain Challenge is one of the UK’s most popular national pro-am tournaments and will celebrate its 30th year in 2023.

Golf GPS specialist SkyCaddie has been the event’s headline sponsor since 2017. James Holmes, SkyCaddie’s General Manager UK & Europe, said: “The Pro-Captain is the ideal event for us, in that it rewards good course-management and teamwork between a PGA Pro and his amateur partner – something for which SkyCaddie GPS devices are well-suited.

“Over 250 PGA pros and their partners used the latest SkyCaddies in this year’s event. We love to put them into people’s hands – generally they are amazed by how much more a SkyCaddie does for you than a laser and yardage book.”

The 2022 SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge was supported by Asbri Golf and Prostate Cancer UK. The tournament is a fourball Stableford team competition open to all golf clubs affiliated to their national golf union.

This year’s Final was held at PGA National Italy – Argentario Golf Resort in Tuscany, with a total prize fund of £22,000.
