Rory McIlroy became the first player in FedExCup history to win the PGA Tour’s season-long trophy three times after he overcame a six-shot deficit in the final round to capture the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The 32-year-old Northern Irishman finished on 21 under par for the tournament, with his closing 66 seeing him finish a stroke ahead of pre-tournament favourite and third round leader Scottie Scheffler and Im Sung-jae.
McIllroy banked $18m for the win, taking his total winnings from his three FedExCup triumphs to $43m. He used a full bag of TaylorMade clubs and a TaylorMade golf ball to seal the dramatic victory, which was his third win of the season.
Speaking at the trophy presentation ceremony, McIlroy said: “This is an incredibly proud moment for me, but it should also be an incredibly proud moment for the PGA Tour. They have had some hard times this year, but we are getting through it and that was a spectacle out there today. Two of the best players in the world going head to head for the biggest prize on the PGA Tour and I hope everyone at home enjoyed that. I believe in the players on this Tour. It’s the greatest place in the world to play golf, bar none.”
