More women than ever before sign up for Celebrity Cup

The Celebrity Cup sponsored by Bulmers at Celtic Manor will feature more girl power than ever before with three women among the first names to be announced for this year’s star-studded event

at Celtic Manor. Television and radio presenter Jenni Falconer and Mrs Brown’s Boys star Jennifer Gibney will both return to the fray after competing for Scotland and Ireland in last year’s Celebrity Cup. And this year Wales will have a female star for the first time with Sky Sports presenter Michelle Owen making her debut in the event on July 13-14.

Organisers are also hoping to be in a position soon to announce a fourth female player, this time for the England side, meaning all four nations will include a woman for the first time.

Best known for her appearances on This Morning and now presenting the early breakfast show on Heart FM, Falconer only took up golf a few months prior to her Celebrity Cup debut in 2018 and admits she had a few nerves on the first tee.

“Hitting that first shot in front of so many people was absolutely terrifying,” she said. “I didn’t want to let the team down but luckily I got the first one away nicely and it was the most amazing weekend of golf.

“The Scotland boys really looked after me and the crowd were so friendly and encouraging. I can’t wait to get back and hopefully show how much my game has improved.

Owen is a presenter and reporter for Sky Sports where she has appeared on Soccer Saturday for the past five years and presents on Sky Sports News, as well as writing for various newspapers and recording podcasts.

Gibney will once again be part of a real on and off-screen family affair in the Ireland team. She will be joined by her husband Brendan O’Carroll, the creator and cross-dressing lead character in Mrs Brown’s Boys, and his son Danny O’Carroll, another star of the hit comedy show.

More star names will be announced soon for the four nations tournament which was won last year by a Wales side captained by TV and radio presenter Gethin Jones and featuring rugby legends Jonathan Davies, Ieuan Evans, Sir Gareth Edwards and Scott Quinnell, and television actor Phil Glenister.

Other players teeing up last year included TV stars Bradley Walsh and Peter Jones for England, boy band musicians Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden for Ireland, and rugby stars Greig Laidlaw and Stuart Hogg for Scotland.

Thousands of golf fans and celebrity spotters will flock to Celtic Manor to watch the Celebrity Cup in July. As well as top-notch golfing action and on and off-course banter, there will be live music and food and bar outlets in the tented village.

Visitors can also experience the VIP treatment in Hospitality or at Saturday evening’s glittering Gala Dinner. For information and tickets please visit the website,
