Foremost Golf produced some superb golf to claim a record 12-6 victory over TGI Golf at the 2014 Ashworth Cup at Gleneagles.
The Foremost team won the opening fourballs 3 ½ – 2 ½ and then took to a six point victory after recording a 8 ½ – 3 ½ victory in the singles.
The stars of the show for the victorious Foremost team were James Lee (Caerphilly), Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) and Darren Parris (North Foreland) who all emerged with two points out of two during the annual competition.
Darren Pearce (Barnard Castle) and Andrew Hurley (Arkley) also emerged undefeated after winning their fourballs and halving their singles, as did the victorious playing captain Albert Mackenzie (Saunton) who halved the opening fourball match in partnership with David Wood (Orsett) and brought home another half point in the singles.
Scottish PGA champion Gareth Wright (West Linton), Gareth Jones (Sandiway), Tom Bolton (Gatley) and Chris Tyrell (New Forest) also produced victories in the singles as Foremost took control of the match.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my team for what was a superb performance against a very good TGI team,” said Mackenzie. “The first day was close but we got the bit between our teeth in the singles and produced some marvellous golf.
“I’d also like to thank the sponsors Ashworth for the way they looked after us during our stay at Gleneagles,” he added. “It was a marvellous occasion and something that none of the players will ever forget.”
Non playing Vice Captain and Foremost Company Director Andy Martin commenting on the event said: “I thought the match was played in a great spirit and Ashworth were incredibly generous as sponsors. The congratulatory tweet sent from Justin Rose was a special moment for all the guys.”
