2023’s season-opening 72-hole event for elite amateurs is now open for entries, with over 200 of the UK’s best male and female golfers expected to apply for the ballot. Competitors can now enter the 62nd Berkhamsted Trophy online at this web page.
The prestigious four-round tournament starts on Thursday March 30th 2023 with a halfway cut on the Friday evening and a 36-hole finish on Saturday April 1st.
The Berkhamsted Trophy successfully transitioned to a gender-neutral format in April 2022, with both male and female competitors in the 108-strong field taking on Berkhamsted’s classic heathland-style, bunker-free golf course – rated among the top 100 in England.
“Over six decades the Berkhamsted Trophy has been one of the mainstays of men’s amateur golf – and we also hope to occupy that same position in the women’s game in the years to come” said Club Manager Howard Craft. “We traditionally kick off the main domestic golf tournament season here in the UK, and entries are always of the highest calibre.”
Big-hitting 18-year old Seb Cave from Coxmoor won the 61st Berkhamsted Trophy earlier this year, shooting five under to win by three shots from Essex teenager Harley Smith. “I’ll be at Berkhamsted in March to defend my title, subject to England commitments” he said. “I also expect several of the England Boys team to be there, to take on the rest of the country’s best amateur golfers.
“We have warm weather events and training in Spain and Portugal during February and March, so the Berkhamsted Trophy is a very useful early-season 72-hole workout for your whole game. It gets you in the zone for the domestic season in GB and Ireland!”
Nigel Edwards, England Golf Performance Director and Team GB Golf leader in the 2020 Olympics, said: “As the country’s governing body for male and female amateur golfers, at England Golf we applaud Berkhamsted Golf Club’s initiative in making the Berkhamsted Trophy a mixed-gender event.”
Howard Craft continued: “Many Major champions and Ryder Cup superstars cut their teeth by playing in the Berkhamsted Trophy, but even though both golf equipment and player fitness are on a whole new level these days, our golf course – though relatively short – always sets the field a touch challenge.

Berkhamsted Golf Club is laid out on common land in Hertfordshire’s largest expanse of natural gorse and heather, with over five miles of bridleways and pathways running throughout the golf course and its 530-acre estate, full of natural beauty.
